Strep throat is a highly contagious bacterial infection, most common among children between the ages of 5 and 15. The illness is caused by a Group A streptococcus bacterium and starts with a sudden, severe sore throat. Although the symptoms range from mild to severe, the infection can cause serious complications such as ear infections and even kidney problems if left untreated. The common treatment involves antibiotics and symptom relievers. However, it is best that you use these natural strep throat remedies for kids along with an antibiotic treatment to ease the symptoms:
Massage is one of the best strep throat remedies, because it can alleviate the throat pain in 20 to 40 minutes. The lymphatic drainage massage is a type of gentle massage intended to aid the natural drainage of the lymph. Start with a very gentle, steady pressure and slowly milk the nodes located under the jaw. Move your fingers down the sides of the throat until you reach the collarbone. You can also rub between the ribs of the upper chest, because there are lymph nodes located in that area. This process can cause some discomfort. If your child feels intense pain, ease the pressure and continue until the throat no longer hurts. You can also use a lotion made from a mixture of essential oils such as rosemary, tea tree or thyme.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), drinking warm tea with honey or simply eating honey are great strep throat remedies that soothe the throat pain. Some studies show that honey has anti-bacterial properties. Another effective honey remedy is made by mixing 1 tbsp raw honey with 1/4-1/2 tsp cayenne and 3 cloves grated garlic. Give 1/2 tsp of the mixture to your kid every half hour.

Add 1/4 tsp. salt to 1/4 cup very hot water and stir until the salt dissolves. Ask your child to gargle with the solution every hour and spit it out after. You can also make a tonsil tincture from one pint of echinacea tea, 1/4 tsp cayenne, 1/4 tsp. of peppermint oil and 1/2 cup fig syrup. Stir well and mix 2 droppers of the tincture with 4 droppers water, or 2 dropper of tincture with 3 droppers waters for a smaller child. After the gargle the mixture can be swallowed. These strep throat remedies will help with the pain and will also kill the bacteria.
Vitamin C can shorten any sickness because it boosts the immune system. A daily dose of 2-3 grams of vitamin C can be used for treating sore throat. For a child’s dose, divide their weight by 150. For example, if your child weights 75 lbs, you divide it by 150 and get 0.50. You can get about 40 milligrams of vitamin C from the juice of one lemon.
